The Render Configurator is a custom Unreal Engine Editor Utility Widget built to standardise and accelerate shot preparation for rendering. Artists select one or more Level Sequences, specify a render version, and define the submission context (e.g. Shot Assembly). The tool then automatically generates a correctly named Movie Render Queue job using predefined studio render presets.
In addition to render versioning, the tool supports ACU animation file versioning, which references the corresponding Maya playblast used for comparison during review. This ensures Unreal renders are explicitly tied back to the animation source they are being validated against, improving traceability between DCCs.
The tool enforces consistent naming conventions across all outputs and injects contextual metadata directly into the render. This includes automated burn-ins and a slate on the first frame, displaying shot identifiers, dates, frame ranges, render settings, ACU version references, and production notes entered via the tool’s UI. These notes are also passed into the Movie Render Queue job metadata for downstream review.
The Render Configurator also supports batch submission via spreadsheet, allowing multiple shots to be queued consistently with minimal manual intervention, reducing setup time and the risk of misconfigured or mislabelled renders.
